We are seeking a skilled and motivated Structural/Mechanical Engineer with 5 to 10 years of experience in the railway rolling stock industry , specifically involving passenger and freight vehicles . This mid-level role is ideal for someone eager to take ownership of complex engineering challenges and contribute to the advancement of rolling stock systems across North America.


About the Role

As a Structural/Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, analysis, and evaluation of structural components for a variety of rolling stock platforms-including passenger cars, locomotives, and freight equipment. You’ll collaborate with a multidisciplinary team across all phases of the project lifecycle: from concept development to manufacturing support, in-service troubleshooting, and refurbishment.



Your role will contribute directly to the safety, durability, and performance of rail vehicles through both innovation and engineering discipline.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Design and develop structural components for passenger and freight rail vehicles in accordance with project requirements and timelines.
  • Interpret and apply applicable codes and standards (APTA, AAR, TC, etc.) to ensure regulatory and technical compliance.
  • Perform both manual calculations and software-based simulations to validate structural integrity, fatigue life, and compliance with load cases.
  • Use advanced CAD and FEA tools to produce 3D models, conduct simulations, and optimize designs for structural integrity and manufacturability.
  • Perform structural assessments, inspections, and reverse engineering on existing rolling stock.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams-including mechanical, electrical, and production teams-to ensure design integration and project alignment.
  • Prepare and review technical documentation, including detailed engineering drawings, reports, and specifications for fabrication and certification.
  • Support project delivery by providing engineering guidance during procurement, assembly, and field implementation.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of design methodologies, internal standards, and engineering workflows.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support staff to foster technical growth and knowledge transfer.
  • Stay informed on materials innovations, joining methods, and evolving industry best practices.


Requirements:

Ideal Candidate Profile


  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Mechanical or Structural Engineering.
  • Member of OIQ (Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec) or another provincially recognized engineering regulatory body in Canada.
  • 5-10 years of relevant experience in rolling stock, heavy vehicles, or related structural/mechanical design fields.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) and structural analysis tools (e.g., HyperMesh, SimSolid).
  • Solid understanding of weldments, fatigue design, bolted joints, and structural steel/aluminum design.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear technical documentation.
  • Familiarity with maintenance and lifecycle challenges associated with passenger and freight rolling stock.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with multiple stakeholders.
  • Bilingualism (French/English) is an asset for collaboration with clients and suppliers.
