Overview

We are seeking a Senior Manager, Software Development to lead a high-impact engineering organization in Ottawa. This hands-on technical leadership role is for someone who thrives in ambiguity, drives operational excellence, and delivers results through disciplined execution and strong governance. You will own the roadmap, delivery mechanisms, and people strategy for an Android team and grow into managing multiple teams working on customer-facing products used by millions worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

  • Delivery Leadership – Own end-to-end delivery of large, complex projects across diverse problem domains; Build and execute team quarterly and annual roadmaps aligned to business goals and measurable OKRs/KPIs; Lead through ambiguity; Balance short-term delivery with long-term strategy; Promote iterative development from concept to production readiness; Partner with Product, Design, and TPMs to define vision and priorities; Collaborate cross-functionally to influence strategy across organizations; Drive Operational Excellence (OPEX) through monitoring, incident management, and process improvements; Manage incidents and change programs; Measure impact and drive accountability; Communicate progress and trade-offs to senior stakeholders.
  • Technical Excellence – Identify and drive long-term technical initiatives (refactoring, reducing tech debt, improving observability, reliability); Build mechanisms to surface technical debt and operational risks using metrics and data from incidents; Align engineering improvements with business outcomes and guide resource allocation.
  • People Leadership and Culture – Lead and scale engineering teams; Mentor and develop engineering talent; Foster ownership, curiosity, continuous learning, and an inclusive culture; Encourage innovation while maintaining operational discipline; Drive initiatives to improve engineering culture and organizational mechanisms; Hire, develop, and retain top-tier talent.

Basic Qualifications

  • BS in Computer Science or related field, or 10+ years of software development experience.
  • 5+ years of engineering management experience leading 10+ engineers and/or multiple teams, including junior managers.
  • Proven ability to lead through ambiguity and deliver results with minimal oversight.
  • Strong technical background in front-end or full-stack engineering; Android or full-stack mobile engineering preferred.
  • Hands-on understanding of architecture, CI/CD, testing strategies, and performance optimization.
  • Experience collaborating with global counterparts across time zones.
  • Demonstrated experience with Agile/Scrum delivery, quarterly planning, and cross-functional execution.
  • Data-informed decision-making and ability to measure outcomes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to bridge technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to define success metrics and hold teams accountable to outcomes.
  • Skilled in managing interpersonal conflicts and handling high-stakes situations calmly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing distributed or hybrid engineering organizations.
  • Proven success in fostering collaboration across large product, QA, and service teams; strong project and stakeholder management, including estimation, risk mitigation, and dependency resolution.
  • Experience balancing feature delivery with technical debt and maintainability.
  • History of improving engineering velocity, quality, and operational performance through mechanism design and iteration.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities with bias for action and ownership.
